Water Trails

A water trail is any route along a river, lake, or bay that is specifically designed for the use of small boats such as kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, etc., and has developed access and launch points accessible to the public.  Our region has many wonderful rivers and the Lake Michigan shore to support the development of water trails.  SWMPC works with communities to develop and promote water trails in southwest Michigan.

Water trails are more than recreational assets - they support tourism, encourage exercise and healthy outdoor activities, promote appreciation and protection of our natural resources, and connect communities and public spaces.  SWMPC helped to build and continues to help update the Michigan Water Trails statewide water trail site.
