As the regional planning agency, SWMPC strives to provide communities with tools and technical assistance to assist with more informed decision and policy making. Tools could include model ordinances, example master plan language, community and plan assessment checklists and information on planning and zoning laws. SWMPC staff is also very knowledgeable about grant opportunities for initiatives such as recreation, trails, transportation, economic development, water quality and public outreach.
One exciting tool currently being developed by SWMPC in conjunction with the Van Buren County Planning Commisison is a Smart Growth Community Master Plan Assessment Checklist. This checklist will be helpful to a community whether they are reviewing, updating or even beginning the process of developing a master or land use plan.
